For income tax returns lodged before 1 July 2010, it is possible that some people eligible for the super co-contribution may have received an incorrect payment. Depending on an individuals circumstances, these people may have been over paid or underpaid. The difference in pay for those underpaid will typically be a minimal amount of around $20 or less.
The ATO's computer business rules made assumptions that may have resulted in a small number of super co-contributions being paid incorrectly. The error occurred in an attempt to assist tax payers and minimise the super co-contribution compliance costs for individuals.
If any fund members believe they have received an incorrect super co-contribution payment they can request a review through the ATO.
For more information, including how individuals can request a review and examples of where an incorrect super co-contribution payment may have occurred, refer to the ATO's Super co-contributions web page.
